Often children who have entered, or are at risk of entering the out of home care system have had limited language engagement or early literacy support. Our staff are able to assess preschool and school age children on their current understanding and use of language.
This includes documenting:
- How a child understands and uses concepts and directions
- What type of vocabulary they are using and how they make connections between words
- How they sequence their sentences and use their grammar when talking
- How much information they can remember
Once we have assessed a child’s current language skills, we can develop areas of priority with families and carers, looking at areas of need and what is the most important to the family. Our intervention is functional and fits in with the routine of the family, focusing on achievable, meaningful goals that promote success.
